  1. What is Kiwanis?
Kiwanis is a worldwide service organization whose members participate through one of thousands of local Kiwanis Clubs, like the Downtown Kiwanis club. The Dubuque club was organized in 1920 and over the years has compiled an impressive record of distinguished service to the community.

  2. How do you serve the community?
Kiwanis Clubs undertake a variety of service projects and financially support several local and worldwide programs. While the activites of Kiwanians involve people of all ages, the emphasis is primarily on serving children and youth. Kiwanis sponsors youth leadership programs at each of the three local high schools.

  3. What are the benefits of joining?
Membership in Kiwanis provides an opportunity to become personally involved in making your community a better place to live. Members make new friends and develop lasting relationships with other members. Kiwanis also affords its members opportunities for personal growth by broadening their general knowledge through a variety of programs presented at weekly meetings, by helping to develop leadership and other skills, and by assisting them to become better citizens and gain a greater sense of fulfillment and self-worth.

  4. What happens at your meetings?
A typical meeting will involve lunch, a formal opening including invocation, the pledge of allegiance, a patriotic song, the introduction of guests, announcements, a prize drawing, and a program. A wide variety of informative or entertaining programs are presented each week. Occasionally, service money is presented to various organizations within the community or new members are inducted into the club. Meetings conclude at 1:00 p.m.

  5. What will my responsibilities be?
Your responsibilities include attendance at the regular club meetings whenever possible, participating in the work of one of the club's subcommittees, and responding to the call for your service in the major fundraising and service projects of the club.

  6. Who can join Kiwanis?
Kiwanis members represent a cross section of occupations within the community. All individuals over 18 years of age are invited to apply for membership, regardless of gender, race, creed, or national origin.

  7. How do I join?
Joining the Dubuque Kiwanis Club is easy - simply attend one of the meetings and fill out the necessary membership application. Sometime after your induction you will be invited to participate in an orientation program designed to help new members become accustomed to the club.
