Attractions

Courthouse: Dodgeville downtown. Wisconsin's oldest, active courthouse. A marker detailing the historic structure is located onsite.

Folklore Village: County BB. Village provides a range of cultural and recreational programs for individuals and groups. It is a rural folklife center dedicated to enriching life through dance, music, materials arts, storytelling, food and other time-honored folk traditions. Call 608/924-4000.

Gov. Dodge State Park: Five miles north on Wisconsin 23. 5,000 acres featuring boating, fishing, hiking, camping, concessions, horseback riding, nature walks, swimming, picnicking and biking. There are two lakes, 269 campsites, 21 miles of bridle trails 35 miles of snowmobile, cross-country skiing and hiking trails and 10 miles of mountain bike trails. Admission fees required. Lands' End: Tours available from May to October. An outlet store is located downtown, open daily. Visitors Center number is 608/935-6207.

Main Street: Dodgeville. The historical downtown houses many businesses. In 1991, Dodgeville was selected to participate in the National Main Street Program. Eleven buildings contribute to the district.

Metropolitan Art: 201 S. Iowa St. Features national and international emerging and noted artists. Phone 608/935-7011.

Military Ridge Trail: Trail runs from Dodgeville to Fitchburg. Open to bicyclers, hikers, snowmobilers and cross country skiers. It has a grade of 2-5 percent. It is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Trail fees required. Call 608/437-7393.

History

* North of Dodgeville on Wisconsin 23 is the House on the Rock. Perched on a rock 400 feet above the Wyoming Valley, it offers breathtaking views over the countryside. The complex includes the main House on the Rock, Gate House, a walking ramp over the treetops, Mill House, Streets of Yesterday and Music of Yesterday, the world's largest carousel and the fascinating Organ and Cannon buildings.

Endless collections of dolls, clocks, lamps, paper weights, gun and mechanical banks, ceramics and steam engines. Open at 8 a.m. daily.

* Wisconsin's first slag furnace is in the city; the oldest courthouse in use in Wisconsin; Stone House Gallery, on Wisconsin 23 north and east on County ZZ.

Nature's Miracle tables contains zilian agate, fluorite, amethyst and geode.

Darlington, WI

* Pecatonica River fishing for walleye, bass, trout, catfish and pan fish.

Canoeing on the Pecatonica River provides a peaceful outing.

* Yellowstone Lake State Park, located 12 miles from Darlington, offers more than 150 camping units picnic sites, swimming beach, hiking, fishing, hunting and an array of water sports.

In the winter, snowmobile trails and ice fishing offer entertainment. The lake, which is two-miles long and a quarter-mile wide, is surrounded by 1,900 acres of state-owned land.

Darlington, WI

Dec. 5: Darlington's Holiday Parade, 6:30 p.m., Main St. Following the parade there will be lighting of the floating Christmas trees at the festival park by the river. Santa will there along with singing of Christmas carols, treats and bonfires. For more information, call 608-776-3067.

* A hiking/biking trail greets outdoor enthusiasts in the Hidden Valley Region of the Uplands. It's the historic Military Ridge State Trail that extends 40 miles from Verona to Dodgeville across portions of two counties. The trail, which is used throughout the year for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling as well as for hiking and biking, winds along the hill country adjacent to Wisconsin 18/U.S. 151.

* Blackhawk Recreation Area, northwest of Dodgeville, off Wisconsin 80 on county road BH. Park features 135 campsites, plus 11 group sites, a 223-acre lake including a supervised beach area, fishing, boating and 1,500 acres of public hunting grounds. In winter, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing.

* Blue Mounds State Park, between Dodgeville and Mount Horeb on U.S. 151/Wisconsin 18, is the highest point in southern Wisconsin. A short distance east is the nationally known Cave of the Mounds with its stalactites and stalagmites. Also nearby is Little Norway with a unique collection of Norse houses and antiques.

* Governor Dodge State Park, 4175 State Road 23, north of Dodgeville, second largest in Wisconsin and third busiest with nearly 300 campsites and more than 5,000 acres of varied terrain. Park features a variety of summer and winter recreational activities.

* Tower Hill State Park, 5808 County C, between Dodgeville and Spring Green on the Wisconsin River. Tower Hill's Shot Tower was built in 1831. The park has 15 campsites and includes a picnic area, hiking trails and canoe landing.

* Tom's Campground, Wisconsin 191, family owned campground includes a rustic stone cottage available for lodging, camper/RV sites, tent sites and modern camping conveniences in a rustic setting near a trout stream, the Military Ridge Trail and Folklore Village. 608/935-5446.
