Attractions

Fish Aquarium and Hatchery: River Park Drive. The aquarium exhibits live Mississippi River fish and trout from local streams. Hours are 8 a.m.-8 p.m. May 1-Oct. 1.

The Gutenberg Bible: Guttenberg Public Library, 603 South Second St. A facsimile copy of the Gutenberg Bible is on display. It is one of a two-volume set that was purchased in the 1940s from the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz, Germany.

Guttenberg Golf and Country Club: One mile north of Guttenberg on U.S. 52. Enjoy a round of golf on this challenging 9 hole course that boasts a Mississippi River view. It opens at 8 a.m. and the public is welcome..

Kann Imports: Treasures from around the world, all under one roof. The shop is filled with high-quality and exquisite detail, straight from Morocco; an image of grace - Lladro, handmade porcelain from Spain; the magic of fine crystal from Poland and France; the rounded cheeks and chubby hands of angels from Breta Hummel, of Germany.

Lock and Dam No. 10: Constructed from 1934-37, it was built under the federal government's Public Works Program. An observation deck allows visitors to view the barges as they lock through the gates.

Lockmaster House Heritage Museum: Grounds of Lock and Dam No. 10. Much of Guttenberg's history and the history of the lock and dam system are preserved here. The house is the last lockmaster house on the Upper Mississippi River and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It contains photos of Guttenberg's early history and vintage furniture, appliances, dishes and textiles. It is open daily Memorial Day-August and on weekends only in September. During the fall leaf season in October, it opens daily again.

Ingleside Park: Take time to relax and watch the river roll by at Ingleside Park. The park runs the length of the community on the banks of the Mississippi River. This is an inviting place for picnickers, joggers, fishermen and residents. Cook out on a grill or rest under a shade tree on one of the benches in the park. Watch barges as they lock through Lock and Dam No. 10. Two-mile-long river walk sidewalks enhance the charm of this park. Watch fishermen, ducks and geese, and in the winter, Bald Eagles.

Mississippi River: The river offers a variety of recreation. There is boating, fishing, swimming and other water activities. Boat launches are at South Park Driver and Bussey Lake.

Mississippi River Car Ferry: Six miles south of Guttenberg on U.S. 52. A car ferry operates taking travelers across the Mississippi River to Cassville, Wis. Service in May on Fridays through Saturdays until Memorial Day, then seven days a week until Labor Day, then weekends only to Oct. 31.

Old Brewery: 402 S. Bluff St. The 1858 brewery was owned and operated by the Jungk family. Now, it has been transformed into an art gallery and a bed-and-breakfast. Tours available daily showing the grain storage area, loading and kiln area, stable house and man-made underground cave. Call 800/353-1307.

Shopping: Specialty shops, antique stores, clothing and other varieties are throughout the town.

Walking Tour: Tour starts at Albertus Building at 222 South River Park Drive, across from the Guttenberg Community School and goes south. There are many examples of German and French architecture. The sites blend with the new to create a beautiful setting.

Guttenberg Welcome Center: 323 S. River Park Dr. 877/252-2323 (toll-free), gutnberg@alpinecom.net. The building is a former DNR house and listed on the historic register. Summer hours: 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.



History

* Ceres Church, five miles north of Guttenberg on U.S. 52. The building is more than 100 years old and is now used only for special occasions. Picnic facilities available in the church yard.

* Guttenberg, on U.S. 52, 40 miles north of Dubuque, was originally settled by the French. The first district court in the territory of Iowa was there. Known as Prairie LaPorte, it was the first county seat of Clayton County when its boundaries extended to the Canadian border. The Western Settlement Society colonized the town with Germans in the 1840s and changed the name to Guttenberg.

* Facsimile of Gutenberg Bible on display at the Guttenberg Public Library. This was the first Bible printed with movable type. Many old and different types of architecture in the building.

* Lockmaster's Heritage House Museum, adjacent to Lock and Dam No. 10. One of the last remaining lockmaster's houses on the Mississippi River. It contains furnishings from the 1930s and 1940s and photos of local and river history. Open Memorial Day-mid-October. Hours are noon-4 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday.

* The Old Brewery, 402 S. Bluff St. Restored 1858 brewery consists of a grain-storage area, loading and kiln area stable house, 20-foot underground man-made arched limestone caves and living quarters. Includes art gallery open 10 a.m.-8 p.m., May-October and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. November-April.

* State Fish Hatchery is located on the banks of the river, one block south of Lock and Dam No. 10. The Iowa Conservation Commission manages a free, public aquarium that displays 50 species of fish, freshwater mussels and turtles common to the Mississippi River. A mile-long riverside park offers picnicking facilities.

Guided tours of the aquarium and fish hatchery are available weekdays. The facility is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. May-September. For group tours, call 563/252-1145.

The fish hatchery is in operation from late March-mid-May and produces up to 15 million northern pike annually for restocking Iowa waters. Visitors are welcome.


Fishing

* North and south marinas. Capacity for 300 boats, loading and unloading, fueling and bait. River access lodging available.

* Stocked trout streams, South Cedar, two miles west of Garnavillo and Buck Creek, one-and-a-half miles east of Garnavillo. Mississippi River six miles from Garnavillo.

Parks

* Riverfront, mile-long shaded park has picnic tables, grills for cooking and gazebo-type shelter and rest rooms. Bussey Lake picnic area with rest room and handicapped boat dock. Fifteen-mile Great River Road Bike Trail.

Camping

* Campgrounds at north end of Guttenberg near boat marina, has electricity, water and toilets. Campgrounds one mile north of Guttenberg.

* Paradise Valley Campground, 19745 Keystone Road. Swimming, hiking and ATV trails, fishing, groceries and playground. Open May 15-Oct. 15. Call 563/873-9632.
