History

* Coralville Lake and Devonian Fossil Gorge, Dubuque Street north of I-80. Alive 375 million years ago, and you can see it today in Iowa. Open daily 8 a.m.-4 p.m. 319/338-3543.

* Plum Grove, 1030 Carroll St. The Stately 1844 homestead of Gov. Robert Lucas and his wife. Lucas served as Iowa's first territorial governor. Archaeology and heritage garden on grounds. Wednesday-Sundays 1-5 p.m. Memorial Day through Oct. 31.

* Old Capitol Museum, 24 Old Capitol at the University of Iowa. National historic landmark was Iowa's first permanent capitol. 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon-4 p.m. Sunday, closed on holidays. Reservations required for groups. 319/335-0548.

* Iowa Hall, Museum of Natural History, corner of Clinton and Jefferson streets, next to Old Capitol. Walk through a billion years of Iowa's natural history in the Iowa Hall gallery, featuring dramatic dioramas including a Meskwaki village, a 9-foot-tall giant Ice Age sloth and the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. More than 1,000 birds on display, with mammals from around the world. Monday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Sunday, 12:30-4:30 p.m. (Closed on university and national holidays.)
