Patrick Costello's collection of western and wildlife art is displayed in this historic stone gristmill built in 1867. A large selection of art prints of other well-known artists is also available. Features restored pot kilns used in the late 1800s to help make Maquoketa's lime industry famous throughout the Midwest. Jackson County Historical Museum: Pearson Center, Jackson County Fairgrounds. Open January-December, Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday noon-4 p.m.; closed Mondays and holidays. Free admission. Call 563/652-5020 for more information. Preserves the history of Maquoketa and Jackson County in period rooms, a general store, a country school, a church and a blacksmith shop. Little Bear Park: 400 E. Quarry, next to Briggs Elementary School. "One-of-a-Kind" community playground was designed by John Dean, of the Robert Leathers Assoc., New York, and was built in May 1992 by volunteers. Hours are 6 a.m.-11 p.m. Maquoketa Caves State Park: Located six miles north of Maquoketa. The park contains rock formations, limestone caves and a natural bridge. Excavations have unearthed bones and artifacts from an unknown civilization. There are camping and shower facilities available. For more information, call 563/652-5833. Maquoketa Main Street: It includes several historic buildings, bounded on the north by W.B. Swigert House (309 N. Main) and on the south by the Hotel Hurst (227 S. Main). The buildings include Decker House Hotel (128 N. Main), Lyon Block (112-116 N. Main), the IOOF Building (103 N. Main), the Merrero Building (111-115 S. Main), the First National Bank (120 S. Main), the D.H. Anderson Building (129 S. Main), the Cundill Block (202 S. Main), the C.M. Sanborn Building (203 S. Main) and the Hotel Hurst Garage (219 S. Main). Old City Hall Gallery: 121 S. Olive. Once a fire station, a police station and the center of community activities, Maquoketa's old city hall is now an art gallery featuring the work of nationally known artist Rose Frantzen and other well-known artists. Included in the area is a bed-and-breakfast inn. History* Costello's Old Mill Gallery, east of Maquoketa on
Iowa 64, was built in 1867. A water-powered turbine supplied power to grind
wheat until the turn of the century. The mill was built on a limestone bluff
with stone walls 3 feet thick. An art gallery and frame shop on the first floor

Hurstville, one mile north of Maquoketa on U.S. 61. * Jackson County Historical Society Museum on the
fairgrounds near junction of Iowa 64 and 62 features collections of native
nostalgia, such as replicas of a general store, one-room country school, 19th
century kitchen and bedroom, traveling vaudeville show, old-time fire equipment
and covered wagon. Museum hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, noon-4
p.m. Sunday and closed on Mondays and holidays-Dec. 24. For group tour
