in 1827 by Jesse Shull. The commercial development of downtown Shullsburg
occurred in two stages. The first stage was in the 1840s and 1850s when the
lead mine was booming. The second period began with the coming of the railroad
in 1881. Tourists to this pioneer lead-mining
town are offered a unique experience the chance to descend into and
explore an authentic pioneer lead mine. At no other place in the United States
is the public given the opportunity to wander through the eerie tunnels dug by
pioneer lead miners. * At Badger Mine and Museum, visitors
are given a lecture on the tools and methods of early mining. Some of the
actual tools used in early mining are on display. The mine is in Badger Park
which has picnic tables, shelterhouses, ball diamonds and swimming pool. * Miner Park, a memorial to all miners, especially those who lost their lives in the worst mining accident in Wisconsin, has been created on historic Water Street. This tribute continues to remind residents and visitors of the importance of mining in the history of Shullsburg. * Historic Water Street is the site of unique shops and restauarants. Recently restories buildings on Water Street offer a shoipping experience unlike any other. Relax in one of several restaurants that now occupy the buildings built in the early 1800s.
