While browsing through the Iowa DNR's fishing photo gallery last week, I came across a picture of a silver northern pike. The 30-inch fish was caught on a gator spoon last year in Cerro Gordo County, home to Mason City and Clear Lake.

The species is a strain of northern pike that exhibits a color mutation (from silver to metallic blue) and lack of spots. They are common in the Iowa Great Lakes (Spirit, Okoboji) and are raised at the nearby Spirit Lake Hatchery for stocking throughout the state.
