Doomsday: May 31, 2011

Remember Tuesday, May 31.

It may well spell out the Doomsday scenario for the TH sports department as we try to cram as much area sports coverage as we can into the June 1 edition. There will be more options than any prep sports fan will know what to do with, and it easily could end up being the busiest prep sports day in the tri-state area all year.

Iowa will get the bulk of its girls regional soccer tournament started Tuesday (Western Dubuque and a few other schools around the state played first-round games May 26), and area teams Dyersville Beckman and Maquoketa will both be playing within a 45-minute drive of Dubuque. Dubuque schools Hempstead, Senior and Wahlert wait until June 1 to begin playing.

Wisconsin will also be playing host to the second round of regional baseball action that day. And with 15 area schools spread across three of the WIAA’s four divisions, it's not surprising to have seven ball games being played in southwest Wisconsin. However, it's also the date for Wisconsin's softball regional semifinals, meaning there area another seven games in the area.

Back in Iowa, the boys tennis team state tournament will be taking place in Waterloo, while the first rounds of the girls state golf tournament will be teeing off in Ankeny and Adel.

And if all that wasn't enough, the baseball and softball seasons will be in full swing, highlighted by that day's Hempstead vs. Wahlert softball doubleheader.

Thankfully, by Tuesday the Iowa boys golf and individual tennis state tournaments will have concluded; the state track meet will have been long over; boys soccer will have decided the state tournament pairings; and Wisconsin track will be in between the sectional and state meets.

Illinois’ baseball, softball and track seasons have already concluded.

No matter what the results bring that day, it should be a good one for sports fans all across the area, and a busy one for the TH sports staff.
